We've heard David Newton drone on and on about who will take the right defensive end position this season.  Kony Ealy has taken what is becoming his ritual preseason ribbing, and Frank Alexander has well been huge,  probably high, and maybe even a little juiced.  Wes Horton hears a who?  And well, Mario Addison is still fast and agile.  Here he beats a wide receiver and a quarterback who everyone thinks should be a wide receiver.

Ron Rivera seems to be playing the hard to impressive father role, remarking he wants one of these guys to step into the starting role, but right now it looks like the position will be manned by committee.  He even moved Big Money Charles Johnson over to the right side to  show the guys he was willing to shake things up.  Right now it's any guys job to win, or in Frank Alexander's case--burn.

Two former Georgia Bulldogs are currently on the Panthers current roster, Thomas Davis and Charles Johnson, and both have a shot at becoming franchise record holders. Davis, who just signed a two-year extension, trails Mike Minter by 45 tackles, and Johnson needs 18.5 sacks to catch Julius Peppers. Johnson has two years left on his contract to get them.

Carolina again didn't make any big splashes in free agency, but it looks as if Dave Gettleman had some key targets he aggressively pursued.  All had a key commonality, they excel at special teams play.  Gettleman grabbed up Tedd Ginn, Jr., Jordan Toddman, Jason Trusnik, Teddy Williams, and former Green Bay Packer wide receiver, Jarrett Boykin to turn around the weakest element of last year's Carolina Panthers.   The targets were more strategic that most give Gettleman credit, however.  He looked to immediately revamp the special teams unit through free agency, rather than rolling the dice on a bunch of green rookies.  All of these guys bring experience, talent, and a hunger to the Panthers special teams.

This has been a pretty wild and exciting offseason for the Saints and there are still possibilities looming for even more excitement before draft day.

The direction the Saints are taking is bold and it’s needed because there was some complacency, which happens when you have been with a team for a few years.

 

The result of being comfortable last season was a 7-9 record for the Saints and massive under performance from every player on the team. Trading Jimmy Graham, Ben Grubbs and Kenny Stills, then cutting Curtis Lofton surely had to make a lot of players pretty uncomfortable, which is the best thing that can happen to them.

Around the South: Mark Ingram Is The Present But Will The Saints Select The Future RB In 2015?

There was a mixed bag of feelings on Mark Ingram coming back to New Orleans especially for an average of four million dollars per year. Basically he only has had one really good season to show for that kind of money. Bottom line is it does make sense to bring him back because he is familiar with the offense and he showed he could carry the load when he's called in upon. Granted he is more old-school style running back where he needs the ball 20-30 times before he really becomes effective and there's nothing wrong with that, but there will be times he will need to be just as effective with less carries. Whether Ingram can learn to do that in the future remains to be seen.
