The USC-Carolina Connection

The USC-Carolina Connection

Recently, I wrote a piece on the Georgia-Carolina Connection that looked at University of Georgia alum who have made their way onto the Carolina Panthers roster. My buddy Steve Danner immediately commented that the Bulldog contribution was thankfully greater than the Southern California Trojan’s.  This got me wondering, who has come from USC to Carolina and what have they done?

Mario Addison Can Move

We've heard David Newton drone on and on about who will take the right defensive end position this season.  Kony Ealy has taken what is becoming his ritual preseason ribbing, and Frank Alexander has well been huge,  probably high, and maybe even a little juiced.  Wes Horton hears a who?  And well, Mario Addison is still fast and agile.  Here he beats a wide receiver and a quarterback who everyone thinks should be a wide receiver.

Ron Rivera seems to be playing the hard to impressive father role, remarking he wants one of these guys to step into the starting role, but right now it looks like the position will be manned by committee.  He even moved Big Money Charles Johnson over to the right side to  show the guys he was willing to shake things up.  Right now it's any guys job to win, or in Frank Alexander's case--burn.

Panthers Release Kugbila and Sign Chas Alecxih

Panthers Release Kugbila and Sign Chas Alecxih

Despite lore developing around Dave Gettleman, not every draft pick works out.  Today, the Carolina Panthers announced they had released former 4th round draft pick, Edmund Kugbila.  The Valdosta St. Blazer never saw the field, spending his two season on injured reserve.  The big man from a little school must have not demonstrated enough improvement either physically or simply the coaching staff didn't think he could be caught up on all the missed time to warrant a spot on the 90-man roster.

Carolina Panthers 90-Man Roster Comparison

Carolina Panthers 90-Man Roster Comparison

As the offseason dust settles and the final holes in the ship hopefully have been plugged with undrafted free agents, the Carolina Panthers initial 90-man roster has taken shape. It’s as bloated as it will get until August when they trim to 75, and then finally to 53 by the month’s close.

Ricky Proehl High on Stephen Hill

Ricky Proehl High on Stephen Hill

“I can’t say enough about this kid,” wide-receiver coach Ricky Proehl raved about Steven Hill on Bustin Loose with Frank Garcia and Mark Yarboro.  Yarbs (Yarboro) brought up Hill with the reservation most Panthers media does when addressing the enigmatic former 2nd round pick who many view as a hopeless bust.

Proehl thinks otherwise, stating “he did nothing but work his tail off….I can’t wait to get my hands on him this spring and in the offseason so as to showcase what he can do. This will be a big spring for him.”

Cam Newton's Fashion Decisions Increasingly Difficult to Defend

Cam Newton's Fashion Decisions Increasingly Difficult to Defend

We all know I've got a man-crush on some Cam Newton, but even I am finding it harder and harder to defend these fashion decisions.   It's almost as if Cam is doing this to mess with me by intentionally testing my love and admiration.  Why do I think this, other than being a egocentric maniac that is really going to make this post about how Cam's dress makes me feel?  Well there are three fashion faux pas that I simply can't tolerate....and I'm not a fashionista, so if they bother me, they are really bad.

Kony Ealy Putting in Offseason Work

Kony Ealy Putting in Offseason Work

Kony Ealy turned it on late in the season after a slow start to his rookie season. With Greg Hardy out for his shenanigans, Ealy assumed a larger role in the defense than initially planned.  It was an adjustment, epitomized in the criticism he received from Ron Rivera during training camp and Cam Newton's tough love as the offense faced down Ealy and the defense in the redzone in a team scrimmage.

Safety Landon Collins Working Out With Carolina Panthers

Safety Landon Collins Working Out With Carolina Panthers

The same day after C3’s Mel Mayock, the cooler cousins to Mike Kiper, mocked Landon Collins to the Carolina Panthers, NFL.com announced that Collins has a private workout scheduled with the Panthers.  Coincidence…..I think not, just like Mel Mayock and Mike Kiper aren’t coincidental nicknames.  And for the internet snoods, we like to have fun around here—so everyone has a nickname, even those who shop at the iSnoods store.

Free Agency Dust Settles: Where Carolina Stands and Who is Left to Target

Free Agency Dust Settles: Where Carolina Stands and Who is Left to Target

As the dust starts to settle, Dave Gettleman is putting on his overall yes they are high above the belly button and higher from the ground and looking to get to work.  The big names are off the board.  Teams have overpaid, and Carolina will have to sift through the heap like a someone who shows up late to a church yard sale.
