Panthers Living Dangerously at Safety

Carolina placed backup safety Dean Marlowe on injured reserve today. Marlowe battled a hamstring injury throughout the preseason that he simply couldn't get over.

Carolina is now left with a problem that they can no longer avoid. This has been a position of concern, even when Marlowe was thought to be a viable rotational player. There are only three safeties on the active roster (Kurt Coleman, Tre Boston, and Colin Jones) and there remains an empty roster position on the Panthers roster.

So what are Carolina's options going forward?

Dave Gettleman brought in Donte Whitner, Stevie Brown, and Major Wright before the season started.  Right now they are all still available and I wouldn't be surprised if Gettleman is on the phone with their agents as we speak.

Free Agents Options:

  • Antrel Rolle
  • Donte Whitner
  • Stevie Brown
  • Major Wright
  • Bacarri Rambo
  • Sherrod Martin
  • William Moore
  • Trenton Robinson

I'm not terribly familiar with the status of all these guys. For instance, Chris Clemmons is listed as a free agent, but he also was charged with assault just three days ago. Let us know if you have any dirt on these guys.  Comment below on who you would like off of this list.

Internal Options:

  • Jeremy Cash
  • Marcus Ball (practice squad)
  • Treavell Dixon (practice squad)

Gettleman has to be working on this now.  Whether it's bringing a guy up from the practice squad or trying to move Cash back to the spot he played in college, Carolina is going to need a warm body on the roster that can step in in the event that Boston and Coleman need a snap off.

Tell us if the answer is on the Panthers roster or in free agency in the comment section below.
