Cam Newton Wins Best NFL Player ESPY
/Carolina's biggest star, Cam Newton, received the ESPY Best NFL Player award.
He's now been named Offensive Rookie of the Year, NFL MVP, and #1 NFL Player by his peers. He's led the Panthers to three straight division titles and a 15-1 2015 season that ended with a Super Bowl appearance. Newton has conquered nearly every aspect of the NFL aside from a Super Bowl Championship. Tonight's ESPY awards, however, signal that Newton's conquests are extending beyond the football field. He is becoming that icon and entertainer he promised as a rookie.
It didn't take this ESPY for us to realize it. Newton is coming off a spectacular season, one that earned him the league MVP award and showed that he's more than just a great athlete, but a deadly passing quarterback.
For four years, he has constantly beat back critics who needed him to prove he was more than just a great athlete. Ironically, it was last night's nomination for Best Male Athlete, however, that signals Newton's star is shining beyond the football field. He's donned the cover of fashion magazines and even has his own kids show on Nickelodeon. His name, style, and ability is transcending his status as "just a great football player." He has been an entertainer. That brilliant smile, those bold celebrations, eclectic dress, and that confident style, that swagger, has been fun to watch. Now that he has has become iconic.
