Who is the greatest quarterback in Carolina Panthers history? The fans picked Cam Newton
/The poll results are in and 52% of you said that Cam Newton is the greatest quarterback all-time for the Carolina Panthers. Jake Delhomme was a close second with 46% and Kerry Collins only received 2% of the votes.
This fan poll went live last Wednesday, April 8th on this website. The poll received a pretty good response but I still expected more votes from the fans. I guess everyone was on Spring Break.
The fans that participated in the poll had a good time on Twitter…
There were also Panther fans who responded on Google+...
I believe that Cam Newton was voted the greatest quarterback of all-time for the Panthers because he is a "franchise quarterback." I also believe that Newton won the fan poll because of the young fan base, and organization.
Carolina Panthers GM Dave Gettleman said Cam Newton is his franchise quarterback. When asked about Cam he said, "He [Cam Newton] proved it to me, he proved it this year. He flat proved it." Well Gettleman is right. Cam Newton has proved to the league, media, and fans that he is a franchise quarterback. Cam has led the Panthers to back-to-back NFC South Division titles and he has also broken several rookie quarterback records.
Cam Newton's NFL Career Stats:
- Career Regular Season Stats – 1,144/1,923 59.5% 14,426 Passing Yards 82 TD 54 INT
- Career Regular Season Record (62 GP) – 30-31-1
- Career Postseason Stats – 57/93 61.3% 711 Passing Yards 5 TD 5 INT
- Career Postseason Record (3 GP) - 1-2
- Career Highlights and Awards – NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Pro Bowl (2011, 2013), NFL Single Season Record (Most Rushing Tds by QB), Rookie Season QB Records (Completions, Yards, Passing Tds, Completion %, and Passer Ratings)
The Carolina Panthers franchise is only 20 years old. Only three quarterbacks have actually taken the Panthers to the playoffs, and only one to the Super Bowl. A young organization also means that there is a young fan base. I believe that there are two types of Panther fans. There are Panther fans who have been watching and following the team since 1995. And then there are the "younger fans" who have witnessed poor quarterback play up until the Panthers drafted Cam Newton. They never got to experience Kerry Collins behind center, and didn't see Jake Delhomme lead them to a Super Bowl.
Do you agree with the poll results?
