Dave Gettleman Emerging as Giants GM Favorite Puts Steve Wilks on Coaching Radar
Ian Rappaport confirmed that the NY Giants are showing interest in Dave Gettleman for the General Manager position after firing Head Coach Ben McAdoo and General Manager Jerry Reese. The team is need of some management stability after a 2-10 start to a season highlighted by a circus event where Eli Manning was benched in favor of Geno Smith. Gettleman, who has ties to consultant and former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi, makes for a logical fit. He spent the vast majority of his career in NY and is intimately familiar with the organization. He's a "Giants guy" who Accorsi passed over in favor of Jerry Reese in 2007, a move that Accorsi may attempt to redeem by bringing Gentleman back.
If Gettleman was to land the position, Rapport suggests that Panthers Defensive Coordinator, Steve Wilks" could be a possibility for the head coach position. Gettleman loves his defensive guys, and Wilks is an aggressive defensive coach that Gettleman knows well. Wilks is less than a season into his first gig as defensive coordinator, but he has shown a certain charisma in front of the microphone that has made forecast him as a great head coach. He may not be experienced enough to take over for the Giants. New York's greatest success came when they were coached by a grizzled Tom Coughlin with a long tenure as a head coach in the NFL. Wilks will certainly get an interview, where his defensive nature and charisma may just make him a viable candidate if Gettleman were to get the job.
