Mario Williams to Carolina? My Thoughts and Your Vote
The Buffalo Bills inexplicably announced today that they will be parting ways with Mario Williams in the off season. It's not that they are going to do so that blows me away. But rather why do it with one game left to go? He's making $19.9M, so why not get your money's worth? And why not be classy? This was a Sophomoric move by a fledgling organization. The question is though, should the Panthers bring in the NC native next year?
Here's Why He Is Worth The Look
I'm going to say yes. Let me preface this by acknowledging that yes I went to NC State and I love Super Mario. However, I still think it makes sense as how often do you get a chance to bring in an elite pass rusher via Free Agency? Not very often. And some will point out that Mario has struggled this year and only has 4.5 sacks. While that is true, it is also true that the Bills Defensive scheme was switched this year from a 4-3 to a 3-4. And you know what they say about teaching an old dog new tricks...
Williams grew up in Eastern North Carolina and went on to star at NC State before becoming the #1 pick in 2006 over Reggie Bush. He has 95 career sacks and all he really lacks is playing for a winner. Why not a hometown winner? I believe it would be appealing to him to come home and finish his career.
Can The Panthers Afford Him?
Granted, the Panthers must sign Josh Norman and KK Short. But the Panthers could make the move and a few more. According to Overthecap.com, the Panthers are roughly $20M under next year's cap. Also, should the Panthers part ways with Charles Johnson, the Panthers save roughly $11M more. So essentially you'd be looking at swapping Charles Johnson for Mario Williams. Williams is one year older and I love both guys. So if I'm the GM, I'm at least talking to Williams and inviting him in to BOA Stadium to see what is left on the tires. Would you? Vote now.
